Skype is not the first VOIP product, nor the best. Then why did it create a mini-revolution in the telecom space? It seems to have revived VOIP, but I don't understand how Skype differs from the other players.

I am interested in a VOIP system that my computer doesnt have to be on all the time for. I would prefer like a system that gives me a perminant phone number.
